Snow load monitoring: New system supports safe operation at a food producer in Malmö

Together with our client, Load Indicator has developed and installed a snow load indication system at a food producer's facility in Malmö. The project was an important effort to give the end customer better control and confidence around the load on the building's supporting structure during the winter season.

The background to the project was a need to monitor how snow load affects the roof structure at the facility. With limited scope for ongoing manual inspection, the customer needed a solution that can automatically indicate when the supporting structure is overloaded by snow on the roof.

The solution is based on a number of sensors installed at selected measurement points in the structure. The sensors register when the supporting structure moves or deflects as a result of the snow load, and then immediately send a signal to a control cabinet purpose built for the system.

The control cabinet, manufactured in painted steel, is equipped with red and green signal lamps and a built in audible alarm that warns at set threshold values. Staff can operate the system easily, and it can also be connected to the customer's higher level system for further integration into daily operations.

An important safety function in the system is that it cannot be reset until the beams have actually been relieved of load. That means the warning remains until the snow has been removed and the load is under control, which reduces the risk of an ongoing snow load being overlooked.

"Being able to give the customer a system that warns in real time when the load becomes too high makes a big difference for safety during the winter. It is about giving the right information at the right moment, so action can be taken before it becomes a problem." says Philip Carlsson, CEO of Load Indicator.

Installation and testing of the system were carried out on site by a Load Indicator technician over a few days of work, and the system was commissioned in close cooperation with our client. Through the entire process, from pilot study and development to installation and commissioning, the focus has been on delivering a robust and reliable solution adapted to the specific conditions of the facility.

The project is a clear example of how Load Indicator works with custom measurement solutions to meet real needs in industry – in this case to give a food producer in Malmö better control and confidence ahead of the winter season.
